This is a soft launch of the new Type Foundry Directory. A few things may be out of order while the finishing touches are put in place.

What’s new & what’s next

In an attempt to move away from my slow & irregular updates, I am implementing a roadmap to help track progress and provide a glimpse at what is to come.

Please note, updates to the directory itself (the data) are constantly happening and are not reflected in the roadmap below. The roadmap largely documents the directory’s architecture, design, and functionality.

This is an intentional decision so as not to become a news source for type foundries, but rather foster a sense of discovery, and to encourage visitors to actively reconsider the directory’s listings.

June 2025

  • TFD V3 is published!
  • New columns of information include:
    • Year founded
    • Countries
    • Language support
    • Purchasing Power Parity support
    • Licensing model(s)
    • General metric(s)
    • Web metric(s)
    • App metric(s)
    • Web tracking requirements
    • Designer covered by client license
    • Logo usage included (w/ desktop license)
    • Social media usage included (w/ desktop license)
    • Modifications allowed
    • Trial fonts character set
    • Student discount type
    • Fonts in Use
    • RSS
  • Hide / reveal columns of information in the settings panel
  • Adjustable grid size
  • Published methodology behind the directory
  • Introduced nameplate sponsors
  • All new screenshots
  • Added more foundries
  • Added privacy policy

Upcoming

  • Dark mode
  • Reset buttons
    • Create a global reset button
    • Create reset/clear button for filters with multi-select
  • Image optimization
    • Implement better image handle to serve smaller sized images for smaller devices and smaller grid sizes.
  • Share / save view settings
    • Link view settings to query parameters attached to the URL
  • Sort options
    • A → Z
    • Z → A
    • Shuffle
  • Unconditional filters
    • Add an option to make stacking filters more liberal, so users can filter by “this or that.” For example, a user searching for type foundries with fonts by latinx designers may want to filter by multiple Latin American countries.
  • Performance upgrades
    • Improve sluggish load times & filtering
  • Remove Adobe Fonts data
    • I generally think subscription services are deceptively predatory and not in the best interest of independent creators and businesses. I have been wrestling with the idea of removing Adobe Fonts from the directory for a long time and still have not come to a final decision yet.

Long term

  • Redesign contribution form
    • Would eventually like to rework the form submission experience to be more fluid and digestible.
  • Typeface Directory
    • This is in progress, but it is also a massive lift. View the site to join the waitlist.
  • Commission database
    • The directory currently is built on top of Airtable which has served me well over the years, but as I work on the Typeface Directory I am interested in potentially commissioning a backend for the directories.
    • I have dreams of a glorified JSON editor if anyone wants to chat!
    • Could allow foundries/users to submit updates easier and make the approval process more streamlined.
  • Recurring automated screenshots
    • Thankfully foundries don’t update their websites too often, however, monitoring hundreds of foundry websites is untenable. I’d be interested in implementing a system which could update foundry screenshots on a set schedule.
  • Font Management Tool
    • This is a pie in the sky dream. But who knows!
